Introduction to Vinson Frederick Moore

Frederick Moore Vinson (1890-1953), American political leader and jurist, 13th chief justice of the United States. Born in Louisa, Kentucky, he was educated at Kentucky Normal College and at Centre College of Kentucky. A Democrat, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1924-1929 and 1931-1938; he was noted as a fiscal expert and supporter of labor. From 1938 to 1943 he was associate justice of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. In 1943, during World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him director of the Office of Economic Stabilization. He became the first director of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion and then secretary of the treasury. In June 1946 President Harry S. Truman appointed him chief justice of the U.S. He generally upheld legislation that supported Truman’s Fair Deal policies, an extension of Roosevelt’s New Deal policies.” (1)
