Lavelle, Rita in Environmental Law

Administrator of toxic waste pro grams for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during the first Ronald Reagan administration, Lavelle was hired by Anne Burford [see Anne Gorsuch Burford]. She was fired by President Reagan on 7 February 1983. In 1982, Congress began an investigation into EPA operations that focused on the Superfund program, which Lavelle administered. She was convicted of perjury for lying to Congress during the investigation and sentenced to six months in prison. She served only four.
