What are Subject Headings?

The Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) refers to a controlled vocabulary, an alphabetical listing of authorized or preferred terms, that classify fields of knowledge or library materials. Most online catalogs and databases use some form of subject headings and thesauri, using descriptors, labels or keywords.

Besides the Library of Congress, other libraries around the United States and around the world (sometimes in translation) use LCSH to provide a subject (cataloging service) search access to their collections, in general online catalogs.

The Library of Congress (LC) Subject Headings (LCSH) are used to identify subject matters and legal topics for entries in the Encyclopedia of Law. The Encyclopedia also uses other classification resources to classify legal topics.

USE references may be used for synonyms and for older and variant forms of headings. In relation to components of the LCSH, LC class numbers are given when there is a close correspondence between the subject heading and the LC classification. (Approximately 36% of headings have class numbers) and there approximately 4000 scope notes in LCSH, which provides guidance in the meaning or application of the heading. They are similar to the “has scope note” of the Legal Thesaurus.
