Practical Information

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

An agency that gathers and distributes credit information about persons and firms engaged in all lines of trade, in contradistinction to special agencies that limit their fields of operation to special trades. Dun & Bradstreet “rates” a business on the basis of information gathered by reporters and correspondents about the owners and managers, giving consideration to character and ability to make good on obligations. The ratings cover capital and credit. They are condensed conclusions that show, by means of symbols, (1) the range of a concern’s estimated financial strength, and (2) its grade of credit, reflecting past record, ability, and business prospects. Letters, from A to L, denote the estimated financial strength; numbers, from A1 to E, denote the composite credit appraisal.
