Manumission Definition
The act of releasing from the power of another; the act of giving liberty to a slave. In the Roman Law. It was a generic expression, equally applicable to the enfranchisement from the manus, the mancipium, the dominica, potestas, and the patria potestas.

Manumission in the U.S. Legal History
Summary
The freeing or emancipation of chattel slaves by their owners, which became more common in the upper South in the wake of so much talk during the American Revolution about human liberty. George Washington was among those planters who provided for the manumission of his slaves after the death of his wife Martha.
