South Carolina State Library [1]

The South Carolina State Library is the official state depository of all state publications. In 2007 the collection of print, map, electronic, and other media format publications numbered more than 90,000. Publications in electronic format (SCEdocs) have been added to the library servers since 2005.

  • WEBLION is the catalog for the Library holdings. To limit a search to SC State Documents, select that Collection. There is also a choice to limit to the electronic state documents. For these SCEdocs, the Item record will include the URL for the copy saved to the library server and a link to the agency website, if possible.
  • South Carolina Foundations Directory The Directory contains information on active private foundations, community foundations, and grant-making public charities located within the state of South Carolina or registered in South Carolina, AND that also give in South Carolina.Most entries were compiled from information found on 2004 to 2005 Internal Revenue Service tax returns. Each private foundation is required to file a form 990-PF annually. This form includes information on the foundationâ??s income, assets, expenses, grants or contributions paid, grants approved for future payment, officers or trustees, address, and telephone number. The directory is compiled by a Library staff member and is available in pdf or paper ($15.00).

SCANDHEC [4] South Carolina Community Assessment Network is an interactive data retrieval system for community assessment, planning and health practices. Users can create tables, charts, and maps according to their interests and specifications at the DHEC Region, County, or Zip-Code level. Birth Certificate Data, Death Certificate Data, and demographics were the first data sets available on the SCAN system. Other available data sets include PRAMS (Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System), Pregnancy data, Fetal Death data, Mother’s Health and Lifestyle data, Infant and Child Health data, Infant Mortality data, Childhood Lead Surveillance, Cancer Incidence and Mortality data from the SC Central Cancer Registry (SCCCR)and Live Birth Infant Death Cohort data. Future modules will include a Community Profile Module. Each data set can be used to create a table or map. FAQ’s, and help pages are included.
Restaurant Inspection Scores[5] Search by restaurant name or street name in a city to find current regular (unannounced) or followup inspection scores.
Health Facilities by County [6]
GIS Interactive Map Services[7] generates maps for shelters, facilities and evacuation routes, and for certain health conditions (cancer, teen pregnancy, death).

South Carolina Legislature Online [8]

Code of Laws of South Carolina [9] can be searched by text or by Chapter.
Code of Regulations of South Carolina [10] can be searched by text or by Chapter.
Another search engine allows searching current legislation by text, subject or bill number, current budget, the Constitution, or the full site. Legislation for previous years (1975 to current) can also be searched.
Nota Bene: This site also retains official electronic documents sent to the SC General Assembly. Research has House and Senate Journals, current legislation, budget, and regulations. Archives has agency reports, Act lists, previous versions of the Code of Laws, The State Register, and Journals.

South Carolina Department of Archives and History [11]

SC Archives and History collects both internal agency records and public documents. It also is the depository of official records of state business and history.
Online Records Index[12]contains 8 databases of records on individuals, places, and topics. These are important for family history searches prior to visiting the agency.

Nota Bene: The State Archives is working with Internet Archive to save agency websites. They plan to have the archived sites available for viewing and searching on the Archives webpage soon.

South Carolina Lieutenant Governor’s Office on Aging [15]

SC Office on Aging connects seniors with available services and providers.
SC Access [16] is a web-based service directory for seniors and people with disabilities. Includes more than 11,000 nonprofit, government, for-profit, and unicorporated agency listings in 18 categories. Entries contain uniform information without advertising. The website has many other links to useful information, most with larger text and icons for easy readability.

South Carolina Secretary of State [17]

SC Business One Stop [18] allows all types of businesses to file for licensing in South Carolina. They can set up a secure file, edit and submit applications, and make payments across agencies. The site includes many pages of instructions and links.
Business Filings [19] A Searchable database of basic filing information about any entity filed with the office. Registered agents’ names and addresses, dates of business filings and types of filings are available.
Uniform Commercial Code Filings[20] Contains information on debtor and secured party names and UCC1 or UCC3 number searching. Names and addresses, dates of filings and types of filings are listed.
South Carolina Charities [21] A searchable database of information on charitable organizations which are registered with the Secretary of State under South Carolina’s Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act. Available information includes organization name, address, and a financial summary.

South Carolina Department of Corrections [22]

Inmate Search [23] The search displays photographs and public information on inmates currently sentenced to and incarcerated in South Carolina prisons.

South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services [24]

PPP has several databases on released or at large criminals.
Most Wanted [25] is a listing with photographs of the most wanted, absconded criminals.
Active Offender [26] search is for offenders currently on parole or probation and are under supervision by the agency.

South Carolina SLED [27]

SLED conducts criminal investigations for the state.
Sexual Offender Registry [28] includes cross references to aliases.

South Carolina Arts Commission [29]

The Arts Commission promotes arts and artists in the state through concerts, grants and assistance to artists, and grants to program providers.
Approved Artist Roster [30] is a database of currently registered artists. The search page gives many categories from which to select artists and entries include statements by the artists and contact information. Most have photos and links to webpages. The database replaces a print directory of approved artists.

Public Service Commission of South Carolina [31]

The Public Service Commission functions as a court for cases involving utilities and other regulated companies.
Directory of Regulated Utilities [32]. Type in a single letter to pull up the entire database of over 2500 companies. Complete entries include complete contact information.

South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services [33]

Health and Human Services manages the Medicaid program for South Carolina.
Medicaid Provider Database [34]. Choose a county (drop down box) AND a service (drop list of 17 services) to get a neat listing of providers. Entries include name, service, address and phone number. The database replaces a print provider list.

South Carolina Department of Education [35]

The State Department of Education is responsible for K-12 public education in the state.

  • School Directory gives information on locating schools of all levels in a city, district, or county. The “LookUp Tool” allows one to choose a district and then decide on the type of information desired, such as school address, district information, or district staff. There are also links for a printable directory in pdf, for lists of private schools and for homeschool organizations, and educational organizations.
  • School Report Cards – Searchable by district, type of school, number of students, poverty index, performance factors, expenditure factors and teacher characteristics.
