Practical Information

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

In admiralty (in U.S. law) law, the money paid to a ship-owner for transporting goods; the term is sometimes used by laymen to refer to the goods themselves. Dead freight is the amount paid by a shipper or charterer for that part of the vessel’s capacity he or she has reserved but fails to occupy.
