Union Definition
In the English Poor Law. Two, or more parishes which have been consolidated for the better administration of the poor law therein. In Ecclesiastical Law. Two or more benefices which have been united into one benefice. Such a union may be made under St. 1 & 2 Vict. c. 106, passed “to abridge the holding of benefices in plurality,” and amended by St. 13 & 14 Vict. c. 98; and under St. 23 & 24 Vict. c. 142, passed “to make better provision for the union of contiguous benefices in cities, towns and boroughs” (in substitution for St. 18 & 19 Vict. c. 127), amended by St. 34 & 35 Vict. c. 90.
