The power of a judge to decrease the amount of an excessive award made by a jury verdict. The award is decreased, with the consent of the plaintiff, as condition for the denial of defendant’s motion for a new trial because of the excessiveness. Remittitur is a means of giving a just award without the expense and trouble of a new trial. See additur (in U.S. law).
