Definition of Uniform Prudent Investor Act (UPIA)

A concept of Uniform Prudent Investor Act (UPIA) applicable in the United States: Model legislation approved in 1994 by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws to govern the investment practices of fiduciaries. UPIA is based on the General Standard of Prudent Investment set forth in the 1992 [Third] Restatement of Trusts; it reflects modern portfolio theory which has become universally accepted. The Uniform Trust Code promulgated by NCCUSL in 2000, and amended several times since, incorporates UPIA wholesale as the standard applicable to the investment of trust assets. UPIA has been adopted in more than 40 states and the District of Columbia.
