According to the Encyclopedia of the American Constitution, about its article titled MONROE, JAMES (1758_1831) James Monroe was the last veteran of the american revolution to serve as President of the United States. He had abandoned his studies at the College of William and Mary to join the army, and he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He later read law under thomas jefferson

1758-1831. The fifth President of the United States (1817-1825) during the era of Good Feelings. His administration was marked by the acquisition of Florida (1819), the Missouri Compromise (1820), in which Missouri was declared a slave state, and the profession of the Monroe Doctrine (1823), which declared U.S. opposition to European interference in the Americas.
