The Thurgood Marshall School of Law Library defined briefly Black Letter Law as: An informal term indicating the basic principles of law generally accepted by the courts and/or embodied in the statutes of a particular jurisdiction.Legal research resources, including Black Letter Law, help to identify the law that governs an activity and to find materials that explain that law.
