In Roman Law. An auctioneer. In auction sales, a spear was fixed upright in the forum, besides which the seller took his stand; hence goods thus sold were said to be sold sub hasta under the spear. The catalogue of goods was on tablets called auetionwriae. In Old French Law. A plaintiff. See “Actor.”
