Actuarial Information

Actuarial tables and much other actuarial information are published in the Thorndike Encyclopedia of Banking and Financial Tables and Thorndike’s Compound Interest and Annuity Tables. Basic mortality tables are posted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including the National Vital Statistics Reports (NVSR); see also the CDC’s list of Related Sites for Mortality Data.

The Encyclopedia of Actuarial Science (Wiley) provides authoritative explanations of actuarial science topics.

The Society of Actuaries Web site (www.soa.org) posts a Directory of Actuaries, a Code of Professional Conduct, a list of Society publications, a list of colleges offering actuarial science programs, information on actuary examinations and classes, etc. For more information, call the Society of Actuaries (708-706-3500); they have a library, and they have been kind enough to calculate mortality tables for me in the past.

Every year the American Academy of Actuaries and the Conference of Consulting Actuaries sponsor an Enrolled Actuaries Meeting that produces a “Gray Book” comprised of “questions (from actuaries) and answers (from the IRS),” a “Blue Book” (answers from the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation); and “Green Book” (answers from the Employee Benefits Security Administration). There is also a “Super Gray Book” CD-ROM that includes all the Gray Books from 1990 to the present.

In addition, you might want to check out the Canadian Institute of Actuaries web site (www.actuaries.ca).
