Actio In Personam Definition

(Lat.) an action against the person. See “Actio” (2). A personal action. This is the term in use in the civil law to denote the actions which in the common law are called “personal.” In modern usage it is applied in English and American law to those suits in admiralty which are directed against the person of the defendant, as distinguished from those in rem, which are directed against the specific thing from which (or rather the proceeds of the sale of which ) the complainant expects and claims a right to derive satisfaction for the injury done to him.
