Prisons Medical Facilities in the United States
Types of Prisons Medical Facilities
Introduction to Prisons Medical Facilities
In the United States, institutions known as Federal Medical Centers house inmates at all security levels from any institution in the federal prison system who require medical, surgical, or psychiatric care. Some states have special medical prisons that resemble hospitals, complete with medical staffs and other appropriate amenities. These facilities serve inmates with communicable diseases that require their separation and segregation from the general inmate population. Elderly and infirm inmates may also be housed in special state prisons where they may obtain special treatments and physical therapy. Finally, state psychiatric prisons house offenders with various forms of mental illness.” (1)
