Introduction to Owen Josephus Roberts
Owen Josephus Roberts (1875-1955), associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, a leading exponent of conservatism in jurisprudence.
Roberts was born in Philadelphia and educated at the University of Pennsylvania, where he taught law from 1898 to 1918. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge appointed him special counsel for the federal government in the prosecution of cases connected with the notorious Teapot Dome oil scandal. Roberts was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Herbert Hoover in 1930 and retired from the bench in 1945. From 1948 to 1951 he served as dean of the University of Pennsylvania Law School.” (1)
