Own Recognizance in United States
Plain-English Law
Own Recognizance as defined by Nolo’s Encyclopedia of Everyday Law (p. 437-455):
O.R.) A way for a criminal defendant to get out of jail, without paying bail, by promising to appear in court when next required to be there. Only those defendants with strong ties to the community, such as a steady job, local family, and no history of failing to appear in court, are good candidates for O.R. release.
