Ignorantia Definition

Ignorance; want of knowledge. Distinguished from mistake, error or wrong conception. Mackeld. Civ. Law, § 165. Divided in the civil law into ignorantia facti, ignornace of fact, and ignorantia juris, ignorance of law. Dig. 22. 6. Lord Coke adopts this division, adding that the former is twofold, lectionis et linguae, ignorance of reading, and ignorance of language. 2 Coke, 3b.
