Notice

This definition of Judicial Notice is based on The Cyclopedic Law Dictionary. This entry needs to be proofread.

Practical Information

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

The knowledge that a judge will officially take of a fact, although no evidence to prove that fact has been introduced on trial. It is a judicial shortcut, a doing away with evidence because there is no real necessity for it. The court will generally take judicial notice of facts that are so notorious that a production of evidence would be unnecessary. It is not necessary, for example, to produce evidence to show the laws of the state, international law, historical events, and main geographical features of the community.
