Citation Date in United States

Practical Information

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

Show in parentheses the year the decision is handed down by the court. It appears at the beginning of the court’s opinion. Both A Uniform System of Citation and Practical Manual of Standard Legal Citations place the date at the end of the citation, but lawyers, when writing briefs, sometimes place it between the title of the case and the volume reference. Many lawyers do not show the date of the decision unless it is relevant to the argument.
