Blackmail in United States

Practical Information

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

The use of any letter or writing threatening to injure another’s person, property, or reputation for purposes of extortion (in U.S. law). The crime of blackmail is established merely by showing the act and the intent; it is not necessary for the writing actually to produce fear on the part of the victim.
