Practical Information

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

The act of workmen quitting their employment in a body. The strike and threat of one are the union’s most powerful weapons in getting its demands from management. A sympathetic strike is a work stoppage by people not directly involved in the controversy but willing to help another group of workers already on strike.

A general strike goes a step further than a sympathetic strike by getting all organized workers within all occupations to go out on strike.

In a sit-down strike, the workers remain inside the plant instead of walking out. The continual physical control of the factory by the workers prevents management from hiring replacements.
