Definition of Sponsoring Organization

A concept of Sponsoring Organization applicable in the United States: A sponsoring organization is a public charity that maintains, owns, and controls one or more donor-advised funds. See also Donor-advised fund; Public Charity. Substantial Contributor. A substantial contributor is generally defined as any person who contributed or bequeathed the greater of $5,000 or 2 percent of the total contributions received by a charitable organization in a given tax year. A substantial contributor also includes the original donor or creator of a private foundation, donor-advised fund, or supporting organization. A substantial contributor to a private foundation, donor advised fund, or supporting organization is deemed a disqualified person. See also Disqualified Person.
