In the U.S., in the context of Foreign Affairs and National Defense, Sphere of Influence has the following meaning: A region of political influence or dominance in international affairs. The United States is said to have a wide sphere of influence in global affairs. Russia is said to exert influence the countries that were formerly part of the Soviet Union.
