Secondary Source in the Context of Law Research

The Thurgood Marshall School of Law Library defined briefly Secondary Source as: Any material, such as a Hornbook, Nutshell, periodical, treatise, or Shepard’s, which describes or discusses the law but does not establish legal rules. Compare to Primary Source.Legal research resources, including Secondary Source, help to identify the law that governs an activity and to find materials that explain that law.
