Hiking the Appalachian Trail (in Politics)

Related to political science, the following is a definition of Hiking the Appalachian Trail in the U.S. practice of politics: Euphemism for a politician who claims to be doing one thing but in reality went to meet with his mistress.

The term was coined after South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) went missing in 2009, claiming that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail when in reality he was in Argentina with his mistress.
