bankruptcy (in U.S. law) proceedings are commenced by the filing of a petition, asking that the court declare some person a bankrupt. In voluntary bankruptcy the petitioner asks to be adjudged a bankrupt. In involuntary bankruptcy the petitioner requests that some person other than the petitioner or petitioners be adjudged a bankrupt.
