Corporate Bonds: Sources for corporate bond prices include:

• FINRA’s Market Data, which provides the last-sale price for many securities sold by registered brokers
• Factiva
• Westlaw’s Quote Server (“QUOTE,” available only through the software)
• Evaluation Services (phone 201-784-8500; fax 201-784-9685) — fax your request; they have extensive coverage
• InvestingInBonds.com from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association(SIFMA)
• FactSet (203-863-1500) or Technical Data (617-345-2000), but they need to be specially set up.

Municipal Bonds: Municipal Bond prices are available from:

• EMMA – Electronic Municipal Market Access
• InvestingInBonds.com from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association(SIFMA)
• Factiva

From S&P’s Municipal Bond Book: Notes, Commercial Paper & IRBs – for historical municipal bond prices; you can get copies from the New York Public Library (via Premium Services) and other business libraries.

Indexes: FINRA’s TRACE Corporate Bond Data provides Bloomberg Corporate Bond Indices as well as Market Aggregation Data, starting in 2002. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) compiled data for bonds issued by insurance companies going back to the 1990s, which I read is available from NAIC directly and through Mergent’s WRDS. PC-Bond Analytics produces the Dex Index family (formerly the RBC family) of indices for Canadian bonds.

Tax Valuation: The IRS has specific requirements for valuing bonds for Trust, Estate and Gift Tax purposes. You can get these prices from the Appraise system by Evaluation Services, Inc. (ESI) or a competitor.
