Established by Congress in 1985, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases investigates the causes, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the muscles, joints, bones, and skin. It seeks improved methods of treating arthritis, muscular dystrophy, osteoporosis, and other debilitating diseases of the musculoskeletal system. It trains researchers and facilitates the spread of information about these diseases. The institute also supports clinical research in sports and rehabilitation medicine.” (1)
