In criminal law. The unlawful resistance to a superior oflicer, or the raising of commotions and disturbances on board of a ship against the authority of its commander, or in the army in opposition to the authority of the officers; a sedition; a revolt.

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

An insurrection by military or naval personnel or seamen against the authority of their commanders. Seamen who by force, intimidation, or trick deprive the vessel’s captain of his authority, or resist or prevent his exercise of authority, may be guilty of the crime of mutiny.
