Most-favored Nation (mfn) in the International Business Landscape

Definition of Most-favored Nation (mfn) in the context of U.S. international business and public trade policy: The principle of nondiscrimination in international trade. For a nation, receiving “most favored” treatment from another means that the products it exports are subject to tariffs no greater than those imposed on imports from any other country. Under GATT Article I all contracting parties pledge most-favored nation treatment to one another. NIFN is frequently circumvented by voluntary export restraints (VERs), however, and preferences (GSP) constitute an exception to MFN. So do free trade agreements (FTAs) between to or more nations.
