Practical Information

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

A service and a multi-volume annual directory of lawyers and a digest (in U.S. law) of the laws of all the states. Historically, in Volumes I through VI, lawyers’ name are listed alphabetically by state and town. A key to the symbols and explanatory notes appears at the beginning of each volume. Ratings are based on the standard of ability for the place where the lawyer practices. Age, practical experience, nature and length of practice, and other relevant qualifications are considered. There might also be a reference to the firm with which the lawyer is associated. Law firms are listed in the second half of these volumes alphabetically by state and city, with the partners’ names, bank references, the nature of the practice, and sometimes the names of some clients. In addition, there is a listing of foreign lawyers. A special listing is made of lawyers admitted to practice before the United States Patent Office. Another section is devoted to the American Bar association, its organization, officers, activities, and canons.

Volume VII of the directory contains a digest of the laws of all states and territories of the United States. There are 96 principal subject headings and numerous subheadings all included in the Topical Index at the beginning of the volume. The uniform arrangement of the material, supported by abundant citations, presents the law in an organized and quickly accessible form. Statutory forms are frequently a part of the text.

Part II of Volume VII is a section confined to digests of United States copyright, patent, tax, and trademark laws. Part III contains digests of the laws of the federal government of Canada and of each of her 10 provinces. Part IV of Volume VII contains digests of the laws of 52 foreign countries. In the case of Australia, there is a digest of the laws of the states of that Commonwealth with the digest of its federal laws. Part V carries the court calendars of the federal judicial system of the United States and of the territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The calendars classify the courts and define their jurisdiction (in U.S. law). In part VI the complete texts of 43 Uniform Acts and 4 Model Acts are presented. Thus the user of this volume has at hand the full texts of these important enactments, which cover so many fields of the statutory law of a large number of the states. The hard-copy Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory is published annually.
