Legal Back

Legal Back in United States

Practical Information

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

A cover that comprised a backing in which to bind a legal instrument or court paper. Often, in this cover, legal documents were stapled for protection. This cover was called a back because it covered only the back of the papers that are bound in it. Certain data, referred to as the endorsement, were written on the back cover. The endorsement varies with the instrument and the names of the parties to it; but it must be typed in a definite position on the backing sheet and the sheet must be folded in a special manner so the typing will appear in the proper position. Also called “Cover Sheet”.
