Intellectual Property Defined

Intellectual property law deals with the rules for securing and enforcing legal rights to inventions, designs, and artistic works. Just as the law protects ownership of personal property and real estate, so too does it protect the exclusive control of intangible assets.

Protecting Against Infringement

Infringement refers to the unauthorized use of intellectual property. To protect against infringement, owners should take steps to put the world on notice that their rights exist.

Intellectual Property

Overview of Intellectual Property in relation to cyber crime: [1] It has been estimated that worldwide value of intellectual property actually exceeds that of tangible things that have already been produced. This theory is based on the assumption that nearly all things past, present
, and future are based on documented or otherwise protected ideas and that similar or new things of the future invariably builds on past knowledge in certain if not significant ways. Because intellectual property is potentially exceedingly valuable and increasingly created and archived in digital form, it is a high priority target for cyber offenders such as some computer hackers and individuals hired to carry out corporate espionage. Nations as well as individual firms are also concerned about protecting intellectual property because their economic wealth depends on preserving legal rights to profit from new ideas along with inventive products and services. In the United States, intellectual property rights are afforded by intellectual property laws and certain state and federal government agencies such as the U.S. Copyright Office and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
