.This means that the court must have jurisdiction over the subject matter in controversy. In rem jurisdiction depends upon the nature of the case, amount involved, location of the property. For example, a magistrate’s court has jurisdiction over a traffic violation but cannot try a person for murder. A suit for damages caused by an automobile collision cannot be brought in a probate court (see courts of special jurisdiction (in U.S. law)).
