Impleader in United States

Practical Information

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

The process of bringing into an action a third party who may be liable to the defendant. See also parties to an action (in U.S. law). The purpose of impleader is to avoid a multiplicity of actions and to encourage a determination of all the controversies existing between the parties in one suit. For example, if a person gets sick from tainted meat he or she bought, that person can sue the butcher. The butcher can then, in the same action, implead the meat packer, and the rights of all the parties will be determined in the single action.
