Hazardous Material in Environmental Law

A substance designated as hazardous by the Secretary of Transportation because it may cause an unreasonable risk to health, safety, or property when transported in a particular quantity or form. Hazardous materials are regulated under the Hazardous Materials Transportation and Uniform Safety Act. Examples of hazardous materials include explosives, radioactive materials, substances that can cause disease, flammable liquids or solids, oxidizers, corrosives, and hazardous wastes. A list is published in the Code of Federal Regulations.
