Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

A description given in many states to a person who is convicted of a felony (in U.S. law), having been previously convicted of any crime. It has been held that an offender is not put in double jeopardy (in U.S. law) for one crime when, upon conviction for a second crime committed later, his or her punishment is increased because a statute categorizes the offender as an habitual criminal.
