Frenchman Definition
In early times. In English law, this term was applied to every stranger or “outlandish” man. Bracton, lib. 3, tr. 2, c. 15. (Saxon). The ancient name of an outlaw (utlaughe) in England. So called, according to Bracton, because he forfeited his friends (quod forisfadt amicos) ; all persons being forbidden to give him food or shelter, or to have any communication with him. Bracton, fol. 128b.
