(French). Superior or irresistible force. Corresponds in a general way to “Act of God,” for example an earthquake or the sudden death of a person. If a party to a contract is prevented from executing it by a force majeure, that party may not be held liable for damages. If the vendor of a contract for the sale of real estate dies before the contract is completed and the contract states that it includes the vendor’s executors, administrators, heirs and assigns, the decedent’s executor or administrator may bring an action for the completion of the contract.
