Introduction to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), independent regulatory agency within the United States Department of Energy (DOE). It became effective October 1, 1977, and assumed many of the functions of the Federal Power Commission, which was terminated upon establishment of the DOE. The FERC sets rates for the transportation and sale of natural gas, the transmission and sale of electricity, and the licensing of hydroelectric projects. It also sets rates for the transportation of oil by pipeline and determines the value of such pipelines.

The commission is composed of five members, appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate. Commissioners serve four-year terms, with one member designated by the president to serve as chairman (see Energy, Department of).” (1)

Description of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is an independent
agency within the Department of Energy which regulates the interstate
transmission of electricity, natural gas, and oil. FERC has retained many
of the functions of the Federal Power Commission, such as setting rates and
charges for the transportation and sale of natural gas and the transportation of
oil by pipelines, as well as the valuation of such pipelines. FERC also reviews
proposals to build lique?ed natural gas terminals and interstate natural
gas pipelines as well as licensing hydropower projects. FERC is composed
of ?ve members appointed by the President of the United States with the
advice and consent of the Senate. FERC Commissioners serve 5-year terms and
have an equal vote on regulatory matters. One member is designated by the
President to serve as both Chairman and FERC’s administrative head.
