Title 20 of the U.S. Code-Education is available at West Group’s FindLaw (http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/casecode/uscodes/20/toc.html) and Cornell Law School (www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/20/). Also look at the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/20/ch33.html), which is Chapter 33 of Title 20. Title 34 of the Code of Federal Regulations is all about education (www4.law.cornell.edu/cfr/34cfr.htm#start), with Chapters 1 to 7 relating to the functioning of the U.S. Department of Education, while Chapters 11, National Institute for Literacy (www4.law.cornell.edu/cfr/34cfrXI.htm#start), and 12, National Council on Disability (www4.law.cornell.edu/cfr/34cfrXII.htm#start), focus on improving education.

Cornell provides a service that searches recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions relating to education in its Education Law: An Overview (www.law.cornell.edu/topics/education.html) section. You’ll find the link on the right side of the page, along with another one to recent educational rulings from the U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeals.

The primary federal agency in the field is the U.S. Department of Education (www.ed.gov/). Although it doesn’t provide much legal guidance, it does have research and statistics to support an argument or suit, including the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (www.ed.gov/offices/OERI/), National Center for Education Statistics (http://nces.ed.gov/), and The Nation’s Report Card from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/site/home.asp). Another source of Department of Education material is the Guide to U.S. Department of Education Programs and Resources (http://web99. ed.gov/GTEP/ Program2.nsf), which is organized by subject, among other improvements.

In California, the Education Code (www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html) takes you to the heart of the matter when you select Education and then click Search. Cornell Law School offers access to education code sections (www.law.cornell.edu/topics/state_statutes2.html#education) from all 50 states, a welcome time saver.

There’s a slew of California government agencies devoted to education, conveniently accessible under Education and Training at California’s official government page (www.ca.gov/). Other useful education websites include California Department of Education (www.cde.ca.gov/), California State Board of Education (www.cde.ca.gov/board/), Office of the Secretary for Education (www.ose.ca.gov/), State Superintendent of Public Instruction (www.cde.ca.gov/executive/), and California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (www.ctc.ca.gov/). Specific elementary and secondary schools (http://web66.coled.umn.edu/schools/US/California.html) and school districts (www.slocs.k12.ca.us/calpage1.htm) with a Web presence are there for perusal. Another useful site for finding particular schools, and perhaps the most thorough, is the National Public School Locator (http://nces.ed.gov/ccdweb/school/school.asp)..

Before we go to the various collections of educational links, a couple of research sites are worth visiting. The National Library of Education presents the Educational Resources Information Center, known as ERIC (www.accesseric.org/), a database of education information offering more than 1 million abstracts of documents and journal articles dating back to 1966. EDLaw (www.edlaw.net/frames.html) provides a similar service yet is much smaller in terms of resources.

Finally, several sites have gathered the wide variety of educational links under one roof, which makes browsing easier when you’re not sure what to look for. FindLaw (http://guide.lp.findlaw.com/01topics/37education/index.html) has one of the best set of pages dedicated to education law, including Laws and Government Documents (http://guide.lp.findlaw.com/01topics/37education/gov_laws.html), and the FindLaw Library-Education (http://library.lp.findlaw.com/education_1.html) is worth your attention for the documents and court opinions available.
