1. An order or judgment finally disposing of an action, suit, motion, and so on by sending it out of court, although without a trial of issues involved. Dismissal of motion (in U.S. law) is a denial of the motion; dismissal of an appeal (in U.S. law) is a confirmation of the judgment (in U.S. law) of the lower court.

2. A release or discharge from employment.
