Department of Justice Associated Agencies in the United States

Introduction to Department of Justice Associated Agencies

The Justice Department (DOJ) includes many other government agencies. Among the largest is the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which investigates violations of federal criminal laws and works to protect the United States from foreign intelligence and terrorism. The Bureau of Prisons maintains federal prisons and provides assistance to state and local prisons, and the U.S. Parole Commission makes decisions about releasing federal prisoners before they complete their entire sentences. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) enforces drug laws, investigates drug trafficking, and develops programs designed to reduce illegal drug use. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives administers and enforces federal laws regarding firearms, explosives, arson, and the smuggling or diversion of alcoholic and tobacco products. The U.S. Marshals Service provides protection and other services for the federal courts and responds to emergency situations related to law enforcement. The Office of Justice Programs provides financial and technical assistance to state and local law enforcement, supports research into justice issues, and accumulates and disseminates criminal justice statistics.

Other Justice Department agencies include the U.S. National Central Bureau, which acts as the U.S. representative to the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol); the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission, which adjudicates claims by U.S. citizens against foreign governments; the National Drug Intelligence Center, which produces analyses of the threat of drugs, gangs, and violence to assist law enforcement agencies; the Community Relations Service, which mediates racial disputes in U.S. communities; the Office of the Pardon Attorney, which receives and investigates applications to the president for pardon or clemency; the Executive Office for United States Trustees, which supervises the administration of bankruptcy cases and trustees; and the Executive Office for United States Attorneys, which provides executive assistance to and oversight of the offices of U.S. attorneys throughout the nation.” (1)

Grant-making components

The Department of Justice has three grant-making components: the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS); the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) comprised of six bureaus and program offices; and the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). These agencies are responsible for awarding federal financial assistance to support law enforcement and public safety activities in state, local, and tribal jurisdictions; to assist victims of crime; to provide training and technical assistance; to conduct research; and to implement programs that improve the criminal, civil, and juvenile justice systems. The Congressional appropriation that supports Department of Justice’s programs and operations reflects the priorities of the President, the Attorney General, and Congress.
