Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in the United States
Established in 1982 to function as the successor to the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals. The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is an Article III or constitutional court with national jurisdiction. It hears appeals from district and Territorial Court (Judicial Organization)s in patent, trademark, and copyright cases. It also hears appeals from final decisions of the United States Claims Court and the United States Court of International Trade. The court may also review administrative rulings of the Patent and Trademark Office, the International Trade Commission, the secretary of commerce, and the Merit System Protection Board.

Analysis and Relevance
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is similar to the other courts of appeal except that it has a specialized substantive jurisdiction, and it can hear cases from across the country rather than from smaller regions or circuits. Like the other courts of appeal, it sits between a court or agency having original jurisdiction and a higher court. It examines matters of law and procedure, but the substance of the cases is highly specialized. This court has 12 circuit judges appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate. It typically reviews cases with three-judge panels. While the court sits in Washington, D.C., it may hear cases wherever one of the other 12 courts of appeal sits.

CAFC (Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit) in relation to Invention and Patent Law
All patent decisions are appealed to this court rather than to the Appellate Courts throughout the United States. While the CAFC decisions can be appealed to, and overturned by, the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court takes few patent cases and so the CAFC is the court which primarily determines the patent law.
