Convention Definition
In Civil Law. A general term which comprehends all kinds of contracts, treaties, pacts, or agreements. The consent of two or more persons to form with each other an engagement, or to dissolve or change one which they had previously formed. Domat, Civ. Law; Dig. 2. 14. 1, 1; Bouv. Inst, note 100. In Legislation. This term is applied to a meeting of the delegates elected by the people for other purposes than usual legislation. It is mostly used to denote an assembly to make or amend the constitution of a state; but it sometimes indicates an assembly of the delegates of the people to nominate officers to be supported at an election.

Introduction to Convention
Political Convention, in the United States, assembly or convention of delegates, representing the membership of a political party, that meets to nominate candidates for elective public office. The national convention of a party, notably the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, is held during the summer of a presidential election year. The body nominates candidates for president and vice president of the U.S., formulates and presents a platform or declaration of party policy, and elects the national committee of the party. The national convention may also adopt rules governing the organization of the party. Delegates to the national convention are usually chosen either by a state convention or in a primary election.
The conventions of the two major U.S. political parties are traditionally clamorous and emotional. The colorful, sometimes unruly atmosphere in large convention halls has often been likened to a rally or circus; but few people are unaware of the importance of the factional campaigning, conferring, and political strategies that underlie the seeming disorder. Common practices at conventions include demonstrative chanting, singing, sign waving, general noisemaking, and parading by delegations, both to support favorite candidates and to express state pride. Outside the main convention auditoriums, much political planning and negotiating is conducted during meetings of party leaders and representatives of the candidates.” (1)

A description about Convention is available here: In presidential election years, after state primaries and caucuses have concluded, the political parties gather to select a presidential nominee — usually the candidate who secured the support of the most convention delegates, based on victories in primary elections. The presidential nominee usually chooses a running mate to be the candidate for vice president, but the presidential nominee can throw open the vice presidential selection process to the convention delegates without making a recommendation.
