A body in the government delegated to administer justice in connection with civil wrongs, that is, wrongs arising from the relationship between individuals as such, as distinguished from wrongs against the public (See criminal law (in U.S. law).) Civil wrongs infringe on private rights and duties; remedy against them is sought by private action. tort (in U.S. law) and breach (in U.S. law) of Contract are among common civil wrongs.
