Instructions given by the judge (in U.S. law) to the jury on the principles of law that the jury is required to apply to the facts of the case to return a verdict. Many judges invite active participation by the lawyers in the preparation of a tentative charge. Each lawyer at a trial has an opportunity to object to the charge as finally given by the court.
