Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

The act of signing a written instrument as witness to the signature of a party, at the party’s request, for example, witnessing signatures to a contract (in U.S. law) or will (in U.S. law). Because the witness signs the instrument he is called a subscribing witness. See also attestation clause (in U.S. law).
